Constructing an Activist Music Education: A 6-12 Curriculum
Juliet Hess, Associate Professor of Music Education, Michigan State University
Funded by Agrigento, this curriculum is an actualization of the tenets that emerged from conversations with activist-musicians about music education that resulted in my 2019 book. In the book, I put forward a tri-faceted pedagogy for an activist music education that included a pedagogy of community, a pedagogy of expression, and a pedagogy of noticing. The structure of the curriculum follows this tri-faceted pedagogy and is not intended to provide units of instruction, but rather lesson ideas that can provide a means for connection, expression, or noticing depending on individual classroom needs. Please select lessons that fit your specific context and combine lessons in any way that is appropriate for your students. The lessons here are not meant to be implemented in order, nor are they meant to be a comprehensive curriculum, but rather used holistically for your own classroom environment.
